The Secretary of Education of the United States, Linda McMahon, announced that the U.S. Government will not provide new grants to Harvard University. McMahon accused the prestigious institution of having challenged and belittled the country’s higher education system.
In a letter addressed to Harvard President Alan Garber, McMahon stated that the university had failed to meet its legal, ethical, and fiduciary obligations, as well as its responsibilities for transparency and academic rigor. According to McMahon, Harvard "will cease to be a public-funded institution" due to its behavior.
The Secretary of Education noted that Harvard will have to rely on its vast $53 billion endowment and its wealthy alumni. The Trump Administration has expressed its concerns multiple times about what it considers an invasion of leftist ideology and antisemitism at the university.
In response to this decision, last month, Harvard sued the Trump Administration to prevent the cancellation of $2 billion in existing federal funds. McMahon's letter seeks to freeze any future grants, alleging that the institution has violated the 2023 Supreme Court ruling that prohibits race-based admissions. Harvard is accused of continuing to practice evident racism in its undergraduate and graduate programs, without providing specific details about it.
